Nonsmoothable Group Actions on Elliptic Surfaces

Let G be a cyclic group of order 3, 5 or 7, and X = E(n) be the relatively minimal elliptic surface with rational base. In this paper, we prove that under certain conditions on n, there exists a locally linear G-action on X which is nonsmoothable with respect to infinitely many smooth structures on X . This extends the main result of [18].

Rational Points on Elliptic Surfaces

x.1. Elliptic Surfaces Deenition. An elliptic surface consists of a smooth (projective) surface E, a smooth (projective) curve C, and a morphism : E ?! C such that almost all bers E t = ?1 (t) are (smooth projective) curves of genus 1. In addition, we will generally assume that our elliptic surfaces come equipped with an identity section 0 : C ?! E which serves as the identity element of the gr...

Rational Points on Certain Elliptic Surfaces

Let Ef : y 2 = x + f(t)x, where f ∈ Q[t] \ Q, and let us assume that deg f ≤ 4. In this paper we prove that if deg f ≤ 3, then there exists a rational base change t 7→ φ(t) such that there is a non-torsion section on the surface Ef◦φ. A similar theorem is valid in case when deg f = 4 and there exists t0 ∈ Q such that infinitely many rational points lie on the curve Et0 : y 2 = x + f(t0)x. In pa...

A Remark about Dihedral Group Actions on Spheres

We show that a finite dihedral group does not act pseudofreely and locally linearly on an even-dimensional sphere S, with k > 1. This answers a question of R. S. Kulkarni from 1982.

Bounded Surgery and Dihedral Group Actions on Spheres

If a finite group G acts freely and simplicially on a complex homotopy equivalent to a sphere S, then G has periodic Tate cohomology: H (G;Z) ∼= H (G;Z) for all i > 0. Swan proved in [26] that this condition was also sufficient. For free topological actions on S itself, the first additional restriction is: Theorem. [19] A finite dihedral group does not act freely and topologically on S. Milnor’...
